The inspector documents the wind-resistant features of your home on Florida’s uniform mitigation form (OIR-B1-1802): the age and type of roof covering, how the roof deck is attached, the roof-to-wall connection, the roof shape, secondary water resistance, and opening protection such as shutters or impact windows. Each documented feature can qualify you for insurance credits.

A wind mitigation inspection documents what your home already has so your insurer can apply credits. A FORTIFIED evaluation happens during construction and verifies that the work meets the IBHS FORTIFIED standard, leading to an official designation. They are separate processes, but they reward the same kind of construction. A roof built to the FORTIFIED standard tends to produce a stronger wind mitigation report.

In most cases, yes. FORTIFIED requires stronger roof deck attachment and a sealed roof deck, and both map directly to items on the OIR-B1-1802 form, including secondary water resistance. That is why we talk about the two together: the same construction choices that protect your home in a storm are the ones insurers give credits for.

Yes. We include a wind mitigation inspection with our re-roofs at no additional cost. Many roofing companies send you to a third-party inspection company or skip the service entirely, which leaves credits unclaimed. We document the work while we are already on your roof.

Wind mitigation inspection reports are valid for five years in Florida. It also makes sense to get a new report after any major improvement, especially a re-roof, since a new roof usually changes several items on the form in your favor. If your last report predates your current roof, you may be leaving discounts on the table.
